Xbox needs a David Jaffe
If you’re not familiar with him already, David Jaffe is the creator of two major PlayStation exclusive franchises – God Of War and Twisted Metal – and he’s very active on the internet. He Tweets a lot, he blogs a lot and, given half a chance, he talks a lot. About pretty much any subject that’s going.
And sometimes I think it’s a shame he’s Sony exclusive.
Not because of his games, you understand, although they’re great games – I love the Twisted Metal series in particular. No, it’s just great that there’s a guy with a lot of experience, authority and responsibility who’s prepared to get his hands dirty and say what he really thinks regardless of any PR line he’s supposed to be following.
Jaffe isn’t the only outspoken voice in the games industry, but he’s the most prolific and, I think, probably the most genuine. You might compare him to Cliffy B, for example. But Cliffy seems a little more calculated to me. A lot of the more outrageous stuff he comes out with feels designed to generate publicity, whereas with Jaffe I get the feeling he really can’t just… let it go. He fits the classic keyboard warrior archetype in every respect but one – he does actually know what he’s talking about.
But it doesn’t just take an obsessive inability to walk away from an argument to be like Jaffe. He’s also the way he is because he really, really cares about what he does and the industry in which he works and plays, and because he has a willingness to engage directly with his audience in ways that most developers would be afraid to. Or maybe too busy to. But still…
So yeah, I think Micrsoft should start doling out webcams and blog accounts to all of its major studio heads. See if anyone bites…
