What’s happened with Avatars on Xbox One?
Anyone who has picked up an Xbox One in the last couple of weeks may have been rather busy enjoying their games to ask this question, but it’s been on our minds: what happened to Avatars?
If you’ve started a fresh account on Xbox One then you will have been invited during the process of logging in and setting a Gamertag to create an Avatar, but at present we see a lot less of these digital stand-ins on Xbox One. Beyond making one and using it to grab a Gamerpic image for your profile, there’s little place for them so far.
We knew that Avatars would be making the move to Xbox One, but we expected them to grow and move with the launch of the new console. However we can find no new features, no new clothing and no immediate use for them. We’re sure games will arrive in time that will make use of them much as they did on Xbox 360. We may even see them take greater priority on the dashboard, but right now they have no place in the clean, Windows inspired interface.
But they used to be so prominent. Avatars were at the front and centre of the Xbox 360 dashboard. You logged in with them. They were the way your friends identified you on their dashboards. Now you can only view them through the Avatars menu. It’s a peculiar thing for them to be thrown by the wayside so unceremoniously.
It’s got us wondering if Microsoft is abandoning its little cartoon creations. Or perhaps we should actually prepare ourselves for a massive overhaul in line with the face-scanning character creation system Kinect Sports Rivals will be boasting. It could simply be that with far greater concerns and priorities in the run-up to the launch of the Xbox One, the Avatars have had to take a back seat in proceedings.
The ultimate question though is, do we really miss them? It took us a while to even notice their absence. Let us know what you think in the comments below or via Twitter @XONE_Magazine.
