Sam & Max Episode 205: What’s New, Beelzebub?
Sam & Max’s second season of episodic downloads draws to a close and, as you can tell from the title, the crime-solving duo are going straight to hell. Stand by for more lateral point-and-click puzzles, knockabout comedy and slick one-liners delivered in a distinctive transatlantic drawl.
The plot is to save the soul of Bosco, maverick inventor and owner of the Inconvenience Store killed in the last episode who’s now festering in the bowels of Hell. Once nice touch is the early discovery that Hell is surprisingly close to the street where Sam and Max live. To give much more away would spoil half the fun of what is still only ten or so hours of gameplay, but it means the game has a more open-ended feel than previous episodes. Admittedly, this means more toing and froing between locations, the curse of adventure games in general, but at least there are amusing cut-scenes and hours of dialogue to keep you occupied.
This is the fifth in the current series and it’s easily the best of the bunch. Series three will no doubt follow later this year and, judging by this hugely successful revival, fans surely won’t be complaining about that. Now, if Telltale can just work the same magic on Monkey Island…
