Project Spark’s microtransaction plans explained
Speaking exclusively to X-ONE, Team Dakota creative director Henry Sterchi revealed Project Spark’s plans for handling microtransactions for this free game creator. In-app purchases in free games remain an area of concern for many gamers who view them as deceptive. Sterchi reassured us that you’ll be able to enjoy Project Spark without spending a penny.
“Our core game, and all the tools needed for creating awesome and interesting games and experiences, is available for everyone to use, for free, without limit,” Sterchi told us. “We also plan on releasing new content packs on a regular basis, to provide players and creators the option of unlocking new stuff for use in both playing and creating. These can be unlocked using earned in-game credits or purchased with the use of tokens.”
Can those tokens be earned with playing and creating alone though? Sterchi says yes. “A player that wants to put in the time, can earn enough in-game credits to allow them perpetual access to play any and every game created in Project Spark without any limitation forever. A creator who makes amazing and popular creations has the potential to earn enough credits to unlock and own every single content pack we release. Those who just want it right away, can purchase tokens that will allow them to unlock content packs to their heart’s content. Even gamers who don’t want to contribute time, creativity, or money have a place in Project Spark, and can play, create, and share using the core game for free, without any limitations. We’ll continue to hone and refine the system, but we’re confident that we’re heading in the right direction.
