Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits
So, the DS finally has another retro compilation – and the question on everyone’s lips is has Konami lifted the curse that Atari cast on the DS two years ago or should retro fans just sell their DS and get a PSP instead?
Well, the good news is that Konami hasn’t meddled with and ruined its games, while each game is 99 per cent arcade perfect, if not more so. The even better news is that the collection has been lavished with a ton of options that treat the classic games with the respect they deserve. Every one of the 15 games can be displayed horizontally or vertically depending on whether you prefer the original aspect ratio or not. There’s also the very cool option to tinker with the DIP switches, literally flicking them on and off with a stroke of the stylus.
Each game also comes with its own bonus material in the form of short histories, digital instruction books and recreations of the original flyers, side art and even photographs of the PCB as well as isolated soundtracks. The DS’s Wi-Fiabilities also allow single card multiplayer as well as the rather unique option to record part of your game and send it to a friend.
Konami Classics is one of those collections that’s best for those who are interested in the historical significance of the games. As it is, this is a respectable selection of games that are excellently presented. Keep that DS handy then.
