Good Lord, We Want Alan Wake 2 After Watching This Gameplay Footage
Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 still lives, even if Microsoft did damn the project to living in development limbo in favour of Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break.
Previously unreleased prototype footage of Alan Wake 2 has emerged, though the video dates back to 2010 – shortly after the original Xbox 360 exclusive Alan Wake launched.
“For Alan Wake, from the get-go, we assumed there was going to be a sequel and we mapped things further out when it came to character, story, details and focus changes,” Lake explained in a revealing interview with Polygon. “We knew we would have to iterate and refine, but there was always a rough road map there.”
“Definitely what we have mapped out is a longer thing than the first game and a sequel; there is more to it. In many ways, we see the universe as a bigger thing. Alan Wake is a very central character, but we have other characters around him like [friend and agent Barry Wheeler] and his wife Alice and Sheriff Sarah Breaker and other characters there.”
Sadly, the sequel never happened. Remedy produced a couple of prototype videos to pitch the game to Microsoft, the 13-minute video above is the most polished, but Microsoft preferred the part-game/ part-live action Quantum Break.
“They have been really supportive about Alan Wake and [Xbox boss] Phil Spencer has been awesomely supportive when it comes to Remedy and Alan Wake along the way,” Lake concluded. “We showed it to Microsoft and I guess at the time Microsoft was looking for something slightly different for their portfolio.”
The setting might look familiar to some of you Alan Wake fans, the enemies and locations were eventually recycled for stand-alone spin-off Alan Wake’s American Nightmare when Remedy released it wouldn’t be able to make a full sequel.
So, can we expect to see Alan Wake 2? Remedy hasn’t ruled it out entirely. The game shifted 4.5m copies on Xbox 360 and PC, so there’s clearly demand.
For now we’ve got our fingers crossed that Remedy has the opportunity to return to its Twin Peaks meets Stephen King action-horror. Now, please… just leave us be while we watch this video over and over while sobbing.
