Dark Souls 2 Covenant Guide
People seemingly welcome death, as the online component of Dark Souls II continues to go from strength to strength. As much as the slight improvements to accessibility help this aspect of the game, though, there’s still a fair amount that isn’t properly explained. And that’s where we come in. Now powering through our fifth tour of Drangleic in total, we’ve seen a lot of invasions and a lot of duels – here’s what little wisdom we can impart unto you that isn’t simply ‘Suck less’ or ‘Try not to die’. Hopefully it’ll come in handy when your world is rocked by unwanted guests…
Way Of The Blue
Overview: Get backup whenever you’re invaded. Really useful, especially in New Game+ and certain areas of the map.
Where To Join: Crestfallen Saulden, near the big altar in Majula that tracks global player deaths.
Enrolment Reward: Blue Seal ring (summons Blue Sentinels to help when invaded, slightly raises max HP)
Victory Reward: None
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Defeat invading phantoms.
1 – Bloodbite Ring (ring, increases bleeding resistance)
5 – Hush (Sorcery, reduces sound made by caster)
10 – Blue Tearstone Ring (ring, increases defense when HP is low)
This might seem like a beginner’s Covenant but truth be told, there aren’t a great deal of invasion options available to would-be assholes in the early stages of the game. In actual fact, it’s more useful later on and especially in New Game+ and in the Bell Keepers and Rat King’s areas – the fact that you can reach it early on in your second run makes it useful for calling in assistance from Blue Sentinels whenever people have ideas on your life. There’s not a great deal to gain beyond additional survivability but that’s enough.
Overview: Make the hardest game even harder with this, DSII Masochist’s Club!
Where To Join: Head up the hill from Majula (to the right of the door that leads to Heide’s Tower Of Flame) and approach the obelisk. No additional requirements.
Enrolment Reward: Champion’s Tablet (‘best’ players leaderboard)
Victory Reward: Defeated invaders drop Awestones.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Deliver Awestones to the obelisk.
10 – Great Magic Weapon (Sorcery, augments weapon with Magic damage)
25 – First Dragon Ring (ring, slightly improves max HP, stamina and equipment load
50 – Conquerer’s Seal (ring, improves bare-handed attack power)
If you’ve ever thought that Dark Souls II was too easy, this is the Covenant for you. There’s no online emphasis at all beyond seeking Awestones from invaders – the main focus is just making the main game harder. Enemies hit harder and have more health, effectively bumping you up to New Game+ before you’ve even begun. If it’s a challenge you seek, you’ll find it right here, plus the Conquerer’s Seal is one of the game’s best trolling items.
Overview: Protect the towers from intruders and even your own kind.
Where To Join: Belfry Luna, after the Servant’s Quarters bonfire in the Lost Bastille – you’ll need a Pharros Lockstone to gain access. You may also join by reaching Belfry Sol from the Iron Keep.
Enrolment Reward: Bell Keeper’s Seal (ring, allows summoning from nearby areas to defend either bell tower)
Victory Reward: Defeating intruders is rewarded with Titanite Chunks.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Defeat either hosts whose worlds you are summoned to or invaders who intrude on your own bell towers.
10 – Titanite Slab (upgrade material)
30 – Hidden Weapon (Sorcery, makes primary weapon invisible)
100 – Bell Keeper Helmet, Bell Keeper Bellyband, Bell Keeper Cuffs, Bell Keeper Trousers (armour, not great but at least now you look the part)
If you want to hit things and don’t care who’s on the receiving end, this is the Covenant for you. Equip the ring and you’ll be pulled in from anywhere nearby to defend the towers, but other Bell Keepers will continue to invade your world as well.
Overview: Single-minded bloodlust for those who want to ruin other’s fun.
Where To Join: Titchy Gren in Undead Purgatory after beating the Executioner’s Chariot. Must have at least one Token Of Spite (obtained from successful invasion or defeating an invader).
Enrolment Reward: Crest Of Blood (ring, increases weapon Bleeding bonus)
Victory Reward: Defeating other players rewards Tokens Of Spite.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Invade and kill other players
50 – Curved Twinblade (weapon, a solid DEX blade with Bleeding bonus)
150 – Crescent Sickle (weapon, a pretty good DEX/INT hybrid scythe)
500 – Great Chaos Fireball (Pyromancy, a powerful spell that requires two Attunement slots)
It was once the case that the Blood Brothers were the go-to troll Covenant – a place you go simply to surprise other players at inconvenient moments. That’s still true to a degree, but finite Cracked Red Eye Orbs (outside of duel rewards) limit how much of a pain BoB members can be. Still, there’s still plenty of room for mischief in this PvP-centric Covenant.
Heirs Of The Sun
Overview: Co-op assistance for those having trouble with areas or bosses.
Where To Join: Harvest Valley, at a broken statue through several tunnels near the Mines bonfire.
Enrolment Reward: Sun Seal (ring, slightly increases Miracle damage)
Victory Reward: Bosses yield Sunlight Medals for all participants.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Offer Sunlight Medals to the statue.
10 – Sunlight Parma (shield, looks better than it is, sadly)
20 – Sun Sword (weapon, one of the best basic swords in the game for mixed STR/DEX builds)
30 – Sunlight Spear (Miracle, a crazy powerful ranged attack)
A glimmer of hope in the bleak world of Drangleic, the SunBros (as they are colloquially known) are a struggling soul’s best friends. With rewards coming from helping out others, these guys live to serve and will run bosses time and time again, leaving summon signs near dangerous areas to offer assistance in search of both Medals and those delicious souls. A great way to earn a few souls while helping the weak through troublesome fights.
Overview: Help the weak, or chase down the guilty. An advanced two-pronged Covenant.
Where To Join: Speak to Targray beyond the Old Dragonslayer in the Cathedral Of Blue. Must have at least one Token Of Fidelity, obtained via helping another player with a boss through a White Soapstone summon.
Enrolment Reward: Guardian’s Seal (ring, enables being summoned to the worlds of the needy)
Victory Reward: Tokens Of Fidelity are earned through helping other players.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Fend off invaders, or defeat sinners.
50 – Spirit Tree Shield (shield, able to parry spells)
150 – Wrath Of The Gods (Miracle, short-ranged yet powerful area attack)
500 – Bountiful Sunlight (Miracle, a powerful area healing spell for allies)
While it seems like these guys are just there to wait on the Way Of Blue, there’s far more to this Covenant. There’s fun to be had playing the hero and going after wrong-doers. Invade and slaughter anyone who has wronged either their Covenant or their world (which, in a game so ill-explained, is basically everyone).
Overview: Honourable PvP in a cruel world, with the goal of transcending humanity for dragon-inspired powers.
Where To Join: Magerold, the merchant in Iron Keep. Need the Petrified Egg from the Dragon Shrine.
Enrolment Reward: Dragon Eye (Covenant soapstone), Ancient Dragon Seal (ring, increases Estus Flask recovery)
Victory Reward: Dragon Scales are awarded to the winner of each duel.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Deliver Dragon Scales to Magerold.
10 – Dragon Head Stone (item, turns head equipment into Black Dragon Helm, allows fire breath on further use)
20 – Dragon Torso Stone (item, turns all armour into Black Dragon Armour, enables stunning roar attack on further use)
30 – Black Dragon Greatsword (weapon, looks great but is hurt by lack of scaling)
There’s no Covenant more honourable than this. Everyone bows, everyone is respectful… it’s like the opposite of the Brotherhood Of Blood. As such, summonings and fights tend to take place in key spots, but if it’s competitive, fair duelling you’re after, this is the place.
Overview: Don’t care about PvP? Just kill some hardcore bosses instead!
Where To Join: Find Darkdiver Grandahl in three locations: past the giants’ door in Black Gulch, under the farther floor trap in the Shaded Ruins and through the far left door in the Ruin Sentinels comeback tour room in Drangleic Castle.
Enrolment Reward: Abyss Seal (Hexes do more damage, with a HP cost).
Victory Reward: Bragging rights.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Beat a trial in each location, then finally the Darklurker boss.
1 – Resonant Soul (Hex, uses acquired souls to deal damage)
3 – Great Resonant Soul (Hex, a better version of the last one, still costs souls to cast efficiently)
Darklurker – Climax (Hex, consumes all souls but grants only limited bonuses – far worse than Great Resonant Soul)
An odd one in that it’s not so much a Covenant as an Easter Egg, the Dark Covenant has nothing to do with multiplayer. Instead, you get to trade Human Effigies for chances to run the game’s hardest trials and bosses, ending in a final showdown with the Darklurker.
Overview: Drag people into your own trap-filled world and mess them up.
Where To Join: Grave Of Saints or Doors Of Pharros – speak to the Rat King after beating one of the rat bosses.
Enrolment Reward: Crest Of The Rat (ring, draws trespassers into your world and offers a Poison damage bonus)
Victory Reward: Defeating intruders rewards a Rat Tail and a Pharros Lockstone.
Devotion Requirement/Rewards: Deliver Rat Tails to the Rat King
10 – Small Smooth & Silky Stone (item, exchange with Dyna and Tillo in Things Betwixt for a low-level item)
20 – Smooth & Silky Stone (item, exchange with Dyna and Tillo in Things Betwixt for a mid-level item)
35 – Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring (nullifies sound made by wearer)
There’s no Gravelord Servant this time around but the Rat King Covenant is as close as it gets, drawing players into your world as soon as they step into that danger zone. Activate the Pharros traps and with the home turf advantage and the enemies on your side, invaders don’t tend to hang around for too long if you’re doing the giant vermin’s bidding properly.
