34. Killing An Alien On The Toilet In Duke Nukem 3D
Angry and with raw testosterone coursing through his steroid addled veins, Duke storms a sleazy porno theatre in the red light district, only to find it full of alien scum.
Laying waste to all of the invaders in his path, Duke enters the grimy toilet of the establishment, and upon opening a cubicle door, finds an alien squatting there, taking a shit. A few rounds later, and the bowel-obstructed alien is history. Hail to the king baby!
Why it’s great
While Doom – building on the success of Wolfenstein 3D – popularized the notion of the first-person shooter, Duke Nukem 3D mixed up the formula with innuendo, humour, stupid violence and hidden easter eggs for those willing to look off the beaten track.
The alien on the toilet scene perfectly captures the tongue in cheek humour of the Duke Nukem series which, in an odd way, has influenced humour in mature games since. Plus, it’s an alien squeezing one out, what’s not to enjoy?
On a technical level, this opening stage showcases the technicality on display in Duke Nukem 3D, as interactive objects, stunning lighting and more helped to made the game world feel more organic than most at the time.
Cast your mind back to the second stage and its pool table. You could walk up to it and waste time smacking the balls around. Or what about the security camera consoles that gave you a teaser of what enemies and secrets lay in wait across the level?
All of these neat little touches rolled together to make a fun, impressive, and memorable experience. That Duke Nukem Forever finally got rescued and released is testament to the amount of love left for the big lug.
It’s just a shame then that Duke Nukem Forever ended up being crap. Ah well.
