24. Surviving The First Village In Resident Evil 4
Leon S. Kennedy investigates a Spanish farming village in search of clue that could lead to the whereabouts of the president’s daughter. However, all he finds is a bloodthirsty mob of infected locals, and there’s also the little matter of chainsaw-wielding maniac Dr. Salvador. Christ!
Why it’s great
Because Resident Evil 4 doesn’t dick about with tutorials or hand-holding. Instead it throws you to the wolves within the first five minutes. You’ve barely got to grips with the controls before al hell breaks loose.
Oh and how it breaks loose. As soon as Leon is spotted entering the village, scores of rabid civilians pour into the area, brandishing pitchforks and flaming torches. The way they scream at Leon as the swarm around him is chilling and really puts you on edge.
What follows is blind panic as Leon hides in a house, using a chest of drawers to barricade the door. Enemies pour through the windows and swarm into the room as Leon runs upstairs in a desperate bid to escape.
But it all becomes too much for Leon as he sound of a chainsaw roars menacingly from outside. Enter Dr. Salvador, a gibbering lunatic who thrashes about with his chainsaw wildly. Salvador tears down the door to the house, forcing Leon to leap from the roof and into the village square below.
The madness doesn’t let up as Leon runs around, taking pot shots at the baying mob, trying to hold them back at whatever cost. Occasionally Salvador bear down on Leon, but he falls after several knock-downs, and with it, the ominous sound of a bell ringing from a tower in the distance.
All of a sudden the mob drops its weapons and starts walking towards the ringing as if hypnotised by the sound. The chaos is finally over, but not before Leon offers a parting shot of “Where’s everyone going? Bingo?”
