uDraw Studio tablet makes its way to Xbox 360, but we check out if Instant Artist is enough to get the creative juices flowing.

Published on Dec 2, 2011

The main event when it comes to THQ’s uDraw tablet has to be the art studio of Instant Artist – and it makes sense, what with the tablet’s main function being to allow users to draw, paint and whatever else.

uDraw Studio does its job very well and is deeper than might be expected, though it suffers from a couple of niggly faults – and not just because we’re terrible at drawing.

A selection of lessons can ease those with lesser skills into things, while those confident in their brush strokes can jump straight in to freely painting, spraying, splatting and daubing to their heart’s content.

Created masterpieces can be saved and uploaded to be shared – though we found uploads weren’t functioning properly, with only part of an image sent to the uDraw website.

Hopefully this will be ironed out, as it’s a pretty big oversight otherwise. The other issue we found was with the general accuracy of the software, which felt far looser than Pictionary (also on uDraw). Odd, but not a deal breaker.

Generally speaking, uDraw Studio is fine for the task for which it was created. As an art tool it could conceivably be used by beginners all the way up to pros, and while it doesn’t have the deep feature set of professional art programs, it does offer enough to hold your interest for quite a while.

Final Verdict
uDraw Studio is a decent, though expensive, artistic tool for those interested in a neater way to get some painting and drawing done. But it has its issues.

A bit more than just a novelty, though it has some foibles and a high cost for entry.
