Worst Limited Edition Console Yet, This Is
We’ve already seen loads of special edition consoles this generation – some good, some awful and some just plain confusing. Brilliantly, this new Star Wars-themed PS4 manages to be all of those things at once.
The console itself isn’t too bad, although from the front (the bit you’ll probably see most of) you would barely know it was a special edition console. Aside from the white etching of Vader’s head (which looks weird at any kind of angle), the only difference is the grey power and eject buttons. Yeah, it’s pretty exciting.
Somehow, the controller is even worse. We get that it’s themed up to look like the panel on Vader’s chest but that doesn’t make it any less ugly. Sporting one off-colour face button and an out-of-place blue R1 button, it just ends up looking like a garish third-party pad from the Nineties. The Star Wars logo touchpad is pretty neat, sure, but it’s not enough to save this mess.
The bundle itself, though, might yet be redeemed. It comes in two flavours – you can either get it with Star Wars Battlefront or the Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars Starter Pack – but whichever you opt for, you’ll also get download codes for four classic Star Wars games. There are three PS2 games (Racer Revenge, Jedi Starfighter and Bounty Hunter) and one SNES (?!) game in Super Star Wars, all reportedly getting graphical overhauls and Trophy support. Hopefully, these will appear on the Store individually at some point – we’d really rather not have to buy a second (worse-looking) PS4 just to revisit some classic games in 1080p…
