A promising but flawed attempt to bring the TV show to life

Avatar: The Legend Of Aang - Into The Inferno

Published on Feb 9, 2007

We may as well admit it from the start: no one here at N•Revolution is fanatical about Avatar on Nickelodeon. Sure, we’ve seen it from time to time and occasionally even smirked during a particularly humorous line, but we won’t pretend to run home from the office to catch it.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate what THQ has tried to do with The Legend of Aang. Although the developers could’ve just thrown our hero into an environment vaguely similar to its TV counterpart, they’ve tried, and in many respects succeeded, to bring Avatar into the world of videogames. You take control of one of four characters from the show (Aang, Katara, Haru and Sokka) and have the ability to switch between them as you go on your merry way. While battles can get tiresome, a basic RPG system adds a small amount of depth. After effectively seeing off a few enemies, your characters’ skill levels will rise giving you access to new moves. It’s an important addition because rather than feeling like you’re kicking ass for the sake of it, you can actually aim to improve your skill set. Ultimately, the system’s main downfall is that it’s not detailed enough. The outcome is that whilst Avatar is pleasant, it’s ordinary.

On top of this, the controls aren’t remarkable and the lack of any sort of multiplayer – those four characters are surely crying out for a co-op mode – leaves The Legend of Aang struggling.
