Tekken 7’s New Features Reek Of Street Fighter
Tekken 7 videos have been popping up online since location tests began in Japanese arcades, but it’s all been dodgy off-screen footage. Now, though, Bandai Namco has released an official trailer for the game and we get to see the series’ transition to the Unreal engine and its controversial new mechanics at 60fps.
Those new mechanics will look familiar to anyone who has played Street Fighter IV. The first addition is Rage Arts, canned super combos that can only be used when you’re low on life and in Rage mode – comeback mechanics are good for newcomers but are considered by many to be a blight on fighting games, so we’ll see how this goes down with the community.
The other Street Fighter-esque new move is a Focus Attack analogue, a chargeable heavy blow that has super armour to let you absorb several blows before connecting with a crumpling counter hit. It looks like throws will beat this, as well as possibly low attacks – we definitely saw one instance where a Focus attempt was stuffed by a sweep. It’s possible each character will have several special attacks that break through these too, but we’ll have to wait and see.
The trailer also shows off two of the new characters (both of whom look pretty cool), but we’re still not sold on that trademark Unreal engine sheen – sure, it’s smooth as hell, but everything just looks a bit oily and strange. Check it out for yourself below and let us know what you think!
