Verdict
Can this leopard ever change its spots?
Well, Strikeforce is certainly the most refreshing shift the Dynasty Warriors series has seen in a while. Here, drilling through hordes of braindead tunic-wearing Chinese warriors using a single tunic-wearing Chinese warrior, remains, but their numbers, the size of the battlefields and length of the missions have been sliced to make the action feel a little (dare we say) Devil May Cry-ish. For the most part, it all pulls together quite well. With all the downsizing going on, Koei has balanced things out by adding a bit of variety in the mission objectives, and blessing Strikeforce’s characters with far more control and options than we’ve seen in previous Dynasty Warrior outings.

As well as a nice new mission hub, in the form of quaint little villages to customise your character’s abilities and weapons, Strikeforce seems to have far more aggressive and varied enemies to slay using a new combat system that gives each character a choice of two melee weapons. They also get a rage meter sitting below their energy bar, which, when full, imbues them with god-like super powers. But perhaps the most notable aspect about Strikeforce is that up to four players, via ad hoc Wi-Fi, can battle through the game together. And while it will certainly prove a novel function for Dynasty Warriors fans, it does bring us to our biggest gripe with the game – its difficulty.
Final Verdict
At times Strikeforce can feel like it’s built specifically for multiplayer gaming; with some of the later missions proving a real slog without the aid of a pal or two. It’s a pity because otherwise this is a pretty decent stab at breathing a bit of new life into the Dynasty Warriors universe. 7.0/10
