In terms of first impressions, Crashday makes one roughly equivalent to striding into a five-star hotel stark naked with music blaring from a ghetto blaster atop your shoulder. From the outset it’s obvious it’s not a particularly refined or intelligent affair. Teen rock and hip-hop music accompany the menus, and a cool racer-type will fill you in on whatever’s going on in the world of smashing cars up, racing cars around and pulling crazy stunts – for these are what Crashday involves.

This unrefined feel runs through the entirety of the title. Though all the modes you’d expect of such a title are present (along with functionality enabling you to upgrade, sell and purchase cars), there’s little in the way of pizzazz. Races are often entertaining, yet it all seems a touch on the soulless side – your car will become damaged, which will, in turn, affect performance, but generally it will have felt slightly on the clunky side from the start. The other modes, such as the wrecking arena matches, checkpoint and stunt challenges feel similarly lightweight. The cars’ handling mar the overall experience, though things do improve as you earn enough to upgrade and progress onto more exciting runarounds.
Despite these downers, there’s an admirable feel of completeness to Crashday, with still-populated multiplayer servers and a few, admittedly easy, mini-games. While it may be a lacking a little soul, it doesn’t lack depth with plenty of racing/crashing to do and generally attractive visuals.
Final Verdict
There’s a lot of superior competition around, but there’s plenty on offer here. 6.5/10
