Verdict
Everyone’s favourite blue hero returns to the DS…
Mega Man ZX is good. If you’re a fan of the Mega Man Zero or X games you’ll be excited to know that ZX feels very similar; based in the 2D action-platformer school of thinking, you play as a human (male or female) who, after being attacked by a group of Mavericks, is exposed to a substance known as biometal, allowing them to transform into Model X. As Model X is rather basic (and instantly familiar), you’ll need to find as much biometal as possible to transform into more powerful and diverse X models. In true Mega Man fashion, different models offer a wide range of powers, such as a blaster, being able to fly and one that fires projectiles… cool. A lot of the game revolves around these models, and you’ll find yourself getting squatted by a boss to kicking them stupid simply by attempting it with a different model. Unlike many Mega Man games though, ZX’s world isn’t linear. Instead, you’re given access to a more open, mission-based level design, much in the same vein as Castlevania or Metroid. Bosses have to die and missions completed to reach certain parts of the map, but it’s nice not being restricted. ZX is a solid platformer, and it’s made even better because of an easy setting which is, well, easy, and a hard setting which is rock solid. Fans of the Mega Man series will be happy. People who have never played Mega Man games will be happy. And we’re happy too.

Final Verdict
Great and diverse gameplay heightened by a wide choice of X models.
Hard mode is really hard… be prepared to get really, really angry. 8.1/10
