GC09: Star Trek Online All Cryptic's Work
Craig Zinkievich, executive producer at Cryptic Studios has talked to NowGamer about inheriting the game from Perpetual Entertainment and how it'll remain true to the Trek canon
"We bought the licence from Perpetual and got all of their assets," Zinkievich told NowGamer. "We looked at the concept art, which was really, really cool, but they didn't really have a game. There were no in-game assets that we could use in our engine. But the biggest thing is, if you're given this licence and told to go make Star Trek Online, would you even look at someone else's design doc? No, we just all got in a room and decided what sort of game Star Trek Online should be."
With such a passionate fan base to appease, the developer has also ensured that Star Trek Online will remain true to the franchise: "We've worked really, really closely with CBS, and they've been helpful with keeping us in tune with what's going on in the universe, what's going on in the new movie, and what's going on in the comics and the novels."
"But when the news got out that we had the licence there were people lined up outside the Cryptic offices asking to work on the game. We have so many Trekkies on the project… The hardest people to please are the people on the team right now. When you fill your team with that kind of person you hope you've got your bases covered."
