If you had any concerns about The Wolf Among Us coming off of an episode that was a slightly disappointing follow up to a highly promising opening, then place those fears to one side, because The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile is an excellent entry in the series.

As you might expect, the stakes are higher in A Crooked Mile as Telltale ramps up the level of threat faced by The Wolf Among Us’ Fables in a tense episode that retains the constants that have made The Wolf Among Us appealing from the outset, while doing away with some of the technical frustrations that reared their ugly head in episode two.

The Wolf Among U Episode Three: A Crooked Mile Review - Coming Off A Cliffhanger

After the cliffhanger we were left with in episode two of The Wolf Among Us, episode three sets its protagonists off on a hunt for the perpetrator of that crime.

As such, A Crooked Mile has a greater pace about it than previous episodes in the series, deliberately creating a sense of urgency that adds tension to the tale and lends a greater sense of importance to the decisions that you have to make.

While some of the devices used to foster that sense of urgency are transparently a ruse – the game periodically reminding you how long you’ve got left to catch the crook you’re after, as if events are happening in real time – The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile tells its story well enough to ensure that it’s a ruse you’ll be more than happy to buy into.

When evaluating episode two, we were slightly disappointed that The Wolf Among Us’ detective elements fell by the wayside after seemingly being set up as a key facet of the game in episode one.

There’s still not the level of depth that we’d like in The Wolf Among Us’ detective elements in episode three, with most investigative sections a simple case of interacting with everything in the room to succeed, but, nonetheless, A Crooked Mile does a far better job of creating the feeling of being a tough and savvy sleuth than episode two.

The Wolf Among Us Episode Three: A Crooked Mile Review - Style & Substance

While hunting down your target in The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile, you’re also gradually chipping away at a bigger mystery that continues to intrigue.

As with any piece of hardboiled fiction, things are never quite as they initially seem and that desire to get to the heart of things, to find out what’s really going on, keeps The Wolf Among Us compelling.

Having said that, there is an argument to be made that many of the narrative twists in The Wolf Among Us are a little too obvious.

That’s a fair criticism, but it should be remembered that this game is unashamedly a piece of genre fiction that’s consciously emulating a set of established detective tropes.

The Wolf Among Us emulates those tropes with enough panache, and is distinct enough in terms of its setting and style, that we’re quite happy to come along for the ride, even if we can occasionally see where we’re going.

Speaking of style, we’ve already established in reviews of previous episodes that The Wolf Among Us looks fantastic, something that sharply comes into focus in The Crooked Mile, which displays some wonderful direction that really shows off the game’s beautiful graphic novel style and encapsulates the noir spirit of the series.

What we will add to that, though, is that the trademark Telltale technical difficulties that sullied episode two’s aesthetics and narrative are absent from The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile, at least in the PC version we played.

The Wolf Among Us Episode Three: A Crooked Mile Review

With outlandish yet relatable characters, striking visuals and its continued riffing on the classic hardboiled mystery template, A Crooked Mile is the epitome of everything that’s great about The Wolf Among Us.

The Wolf Among Us may be distinct from Telltale’s The Walking Dead in many aspects, but with three episodes of The Wolf Among Us now under its belt, what’s clear is that the class that marked out The Walking Dead is on show in this series too.

We ended our review of episode two remarking that we wanted more and after the fantastic episode that is A Crooked Mile, that certainly remains the case.
