‘No NBA Hurts EA’s Rep, Raises Stakes’ – Analyst
EA Sports eventually canned NBA Elite 11 late in the day last year, and will go without a basketball sim this year, instead releasing NBA Jam: On Fire Edition in October.
"Take-Two sold almost 4 million units of NBA 2K11 this past holidays without a competitive game from EA," Woo told NowGamer. "I think that Take-Two will likely continue to enjoy solid game sales from its NBA game as EA misses another year. On a financial basis, EA is big enough to have this not be a big impact, but it is a negative impact as they likely had costs (my estimate is $10 million) involved with the game, and now they won't have revenue for at least another year."
Despite EA Sports being able to soak up the losses, Woo thinks things will hot up when EA does return to the basketball sim market. "On a reputation basis, as EA touts itself as the sports leader in video games, it does take a slight hit for no NBA game, and does raise the stakes when their next game does come out."
