Nintendo World Championships Cart

Rare NES cartridge sells for more than the price of a car...

Here at NowGamer we’ve paid for some pricey games in the past. Street Fighter II Turbo on the Super Nintendo set us back £65. Turok 2 and an N64 memory module (necessary to get it running that bit smoother) cost a staggering £80. And then there was an imported copy of Star Wing, again on the SNES at the buy-a-new-console-instead price of £120.

All these pale into insignificance however, with the recent sale of a 1990 NES cart – an edition of Nintendo World Championships reportedly limited to just 26 gold-coloured copies, was recently snapped up by collector JJ Hendricks for $17,500 (almost £11,000), a bargain considering the buyer’s asking price was originally $25,000.

The cart actually has a time limit of just over 6 minutes during which you can play portions of Super Mario Bros., Tetris and Rad Racer. To put the price in context here’s a list of things you could buy instead:

* 36 PlayStation 3s
* 108 Xbox 360 arcades
* 90 copies of Star Wing on SNES
