McGee: 'Kinect Shovelware Vital'

On his blog, Alice 2 developer American McGee has today suggested that Microsoft's Kinect could be 'destined to fail' unless it embraces shovelware.

While it has not been billed as a peripheral for hardcore or mature gamers, there has been a lot of talk lately suggesting that Microsoft wants Kinect games to be built from the ground up in close relation to the technology.

However, McGee argue on his blog that shovelware is vital for the success of Kinect. "Shovelware plague? If a “plague” brought with it success and riches beyond my wildest dreams I’d hardly deride it." The developer stated, "Nor would I think of altering the plague in hopes of re-creating that success the came with it. If plague equals success, then more plague, please! Makes me wonder… are they launching a platform or an ideal?"

“Makes me wonder...are they launching a platform or an ideal?”

Microsoft unveiled the Kinect brand at E3 2010, staking its claim in the motion control arms race. It will compete with Wii and PlayStation Move when it launches in October.
