Ailing publisher Midway is attempting to sell off the rights to it Mortal Kombat franchise, in an effort to pay back the company's crippling loans
The revelation came in court documents revolving around Midway's current bankruptcy filing. The documents reveal that the publisher's management have been promised bonuses for achieving a number of goals designed to raise cash.
One of those goals was to sell The Wheelman, which Midway achieved this year when the game was picked up by Ubisoft. Another is to secure an "asset purchase agreement for the sale of Midway's Mortal Kombat franchise".
“Mortal Kombat is arguably the publisher's most valuable IP”
Mortal Kombat is arguably the publisher's most valuable IP, with a franchise that's lasted over 15 years.
Midway is setting aside USD 3,755,000 in bonuses to pay to management for achieving its goals, while at the same time refusing to pay laid-off employees the remainder of their paid holiday leave.
The publisher is also currently under scrutiny over the conditions surrounding its sale to current majority stake holder Mark Thomas.
