Nintendo has released new details on Pokemon X & Y's Mega Evolutions, a new feature that lets certain Pokemon evolve beyond their final forms.
Nintendo revealed that Pokemon X and Y starters - Fennekin, Froakie and Chespie - will be given to your by your friends, unlike the series' tradition of being handed over by the game's Professor.
However it was confirmed that Professor Sycamore will also give you a Pokemon from a choice of three, which will be the three starter Pokemon from Pokemon Red and Blue - Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur.
However this all ties into the new Mega Evolution feature.
Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur's final forms - Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur - can also Mega Evolve and will form brand new Mega versions of these Pokemon.
This ties into the Mega Ring, which your player character will wear. He (or she) will activate this in battle and pair up with the Mega Stone that your Pokemon is holding to enact a Mega Evolution.
Sadly there are few details on exactly how this is acquired and whether the evolutions are permanent (that's unlikely, by the way) or not.
Nintendo also suggested that Mega Evolutions are directly related to a Pokemon's relationship with their Trainer, so you'll need to make sure you can control your Charizard if you hope to see him Mega Evolve.
Nintendo also confirmed the details on the original three starters' Mega Evolution: Mega Venusaur has the ability Thick Fat, Mega Charizard has the ability Drought and Mega Blastoise has the ability Mega Launcher that boosts its moves.
