The console wars are kicking off all over again as the back and forth between Sony and Microsoft continues. While Nintendo just sits there. Quietly.

But when next-gen does roll around, does it matter which console is more powerful or is it more about the games, the price or even the policies of the consoles?

Sony's senior vice president of the PlayStation brand has revealed that - as a company - Sony believes the PS4 will beat the Xbox One on graphical fidelity.

"The reality is that every time a generation changes the playing field is leveled," said SVP Guy Longworth in an interview with GI. We actually think that we're going to have superior graphic fidelity, but the whole value proposition has to be right."

Longworth adds that "it's not just about graphic fidelity", and that there are many more questions to be answered. "What are our policies? What are our principles? What do we stand for, and how do we communicate it?"

More specifically Longworth is talking of the PS4 having no restrictions on used games, something he believes Jack Tretton "very clearly told you what we stand for" during Sony's E3 conference.

"We think that's the right thing for gamers," added Longworth, "we think that's the right thing for our platform, and we're very happy to tell people about it.

"What we try to do is offer a relatively level playing field and let the gamers decide," said Longworth. "We're not trying to advantage them, we believe in consumer choice.

Longworth acknowledges that not everyone is ready to embrace a digital-only future, and forcing people to do so will only put them off your brand.

"It's clear that the vast majority of the people want to go down to GameStop or Best Buy, they don't want to buy it online right now. How that might change in the future is kind of hard to predict."

Longworth concluded by adding that "people might be quite surprised, I think physical games will be around a lot longer than some people think."

It's these policies - alongside the price - that a set of analysts recently claimed meant would help the PS4 outsell the Xbox One three to two.
