When Blizzard came on stage during Sony's PS4 reveal it was a pretty big deal, and this partnership looks like it could work out well for the gamers.
Talking about bringing Diablo 3 to PS3 and PS4 on the PS blog, Blizzard revealed some of the details of how Diablo 3 will work on PS4 and how important the new controller is to that experience.
"So for us the thing that's exciting about the new console is actually the controller," said Blizzard's production director John Hight. "That's where it all begins, that's where you develop that relationship with your character on the screen."
Lead console designer Josh Mosqueira reiterated the point, adding: "At Blizzard we have the philosophy that 'control is king' and working on a console version for Diablo 3 for us that means 'controller is king'."
Mosqueira then went on to describe some of the new, exclusive ways that the PS4's controller will be adapted to the console version of Diablo 3.
"When you flick the right stick your character actually performs a dodge move," said Mosqueira, "that is unique to the console.
"And we added that thing first because PlayStation players are going to have this expectation that as a console game I should be able to do that, I should be able to have this cool dodge mechanic and we wanted to give them that."
Mosqueira then added that this new ability was implemented to enable gamers "to quickly reposition" for an added tactical edge to combat.
John Hight also praised the DualShock 4's new touchpad, claiming the new feature will "give us a lot more opportunity to make [Diablo 3's] interface a lot easier."
Mosqueira added that "the possibility of the trackpad is really exciting and we really can't wait to dive into it and make it as awesome as we can."
He also confirmed some of the ways the touchpad will be implemented, enabling inventory management to be much easier.
Additionally there will be a new radial menu where you'll be able to see your character much bigger, as well as a new Quick-Equip feature, which will enable gamers to press up on the D-Pad to cycle through any of the recently collected items to decide "right then and there" whether they want to equip it or not.
We're excited to play Diablo 3 on console and, somehow, think it might actually be the best place for a game like this.
