Ubisoft say 3D is the future of games

3D is like Pringles; once you pop you can’t stop. No, it’s like Ferrero Rocher; with these three-dimensional images Ubisoft, you are really spoiling us. No, we’re not exactly sure what 3D is, but perhaps Ubisoft, who are bringing 3D to the gaming masses with Avatar, could give us a worthy analogy.

“3D is to pictures what Dolby Stereo was to sound,” Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat told the Financial Post. “No one wants to go back to mono.” Avatar: The Game uses stereoscopic 3D technology much like you’ll be experiencing in the cinema watching James Cameron’s movie from December 18. As we already know, Sony has its own plans for much more high-tech 3D for the home which it hopes to roll out across all its games, but Ubisoft is getting ahead of the curve.

“We're trying to build capacity to tap into other entertainment experiences ”

As it is Ubisoft has been shaking up the way it operates for some months with 3D only being the tip of the iceberg. The recent release of Assassin’s Creed II accompanied by the live action short film Assassin’s Creed: Lineage, is testament to Ubisoft’s ambitions as an entertainment and not just games publisher. “I don’t want to get into the pitfall of blurring the lines between film and game,” Mallat explained. “We’re trying to build capacity to tap into other entertainment experiences. The value lies on the way to get there.”

Avatar: The Game is released December 4.
