The next generation of consoles including PS4 and Xbox 720 will boost retail sales, says a director of the UK’s leading games retailer, GAME.

PlayStation 4 pre-orders are ‘performing very well so far’ according to GAME, backing up a statement made by ShopTo earlier this week that Sony’s next-gen PlayStation is seeing ‘unprecedented demand’.

Category director for the retailer Charlotte Knight told NowGamer when asked if the retailer is confident in the console's future: “Absolutely. Historically, the videogames industry has always been cyclical in line with the release of new hardware.

“Whilst that might change as the gaming landscape evolves, right now we can be certain that the next generation of consoles will boost retail sales.”

Comparing the reveal to PS3 and Wii U, Knight said: “In terms of previous console launches, the PlayStation 3 launch was a very long time ago and the market has changed a lot since then, so comparisons between the two don't really tell us much.

“It's also difficult to compare the PS4 to the WiiU as they're very different products with different fanbases.

“What we do know is that we saw a huge amount of activity and that our PlayStation 4 pre-orders are performing very well so far.

“Despite not actually seeing the device, the impressive hardware specs and incredible-looking games were more than enough to convince fans to secure their console and avoid disappointment when it launches.”

Knight also said the new console will provide a place for fresh IPs to do well.

She said that Killzone and Infamous have been generating excitement, while there has been ‘real interest’ in new IPs like Destiny and Watch Dogs.

Knight added: “There's real excitement in the classic Sony brands like Killzone and Infamous which are being brought back to life and we're seeing real interest in some of the new IPs like Watch Dogs and Destiny.”
