Microtransactions in games are a ‘necessary evil’ according to analyst Michael Pachter who says he ‘doesn’t understand the angst’ about them.
Last week EA announced it plans to add microtransactions – small payments built into titles to allow in-game purchases, like the recent Dead Space 3 – in all of its upcoming games because gamers ‘enjoy and demand’ them.
After a flurry of internet outrage, former Gears Of War developer Cliff Bleszinski came out in EA’s defence, saying it was not the only company guilty of monetising games.
But Michael Pachter of analytics firm Wedbush Morgan has now gone on record in defence of microtransactions.
He said: “I don't really understand all of the angst about microtransactions.
“Nobody has to buy anything, and most of the items for sale don't make a difference in overall game play, just allow people to dress up their characters and the like.
“Yes, it's nickel and dime, but since nobody has to spend money to enjoy the game, I don't see why anyone cares.
“Yes, they are a necessary evil. Games cost a lot to make, and publishers are trying to hold the line at $60 retail pricing, so they must look for ways to increase monetization.
“I don't think game sales are suffering because of microtransactions.”
