Will Sony's PS4 evolve the PS Plus online service and give next-gen gamers more choice?
Published on Feb 27, 2013
The PS4 reveal brought with a tantalising glimpse into the future of the Sony brand and with PS Plus already winning over plenty of fans, it could be looking at using a tiered service for its next-gen console.
And from the speculation it appears that PS4’s new Gaikai enabling streaming service could allow Sony to present different levels of access to content on PSN.
A quote from Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida (from the Guardian) hints that the PS4’s online service could come with three different tiers.
"We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that,” explained Yoshida.
“We can do subscription services when we have more content – especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games – that's our dream."
"As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we'll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models – like a cable TV company.”
Does this mean we’ll see the separating of certain content or access to content? Well, that’s not clear right now, but by the time E3 rolls around we should have a good idea what the PS4’s online service will look like.
