IDC has reported that Sony's PlayStation 3 shipments has overtaken that of Microsoft's Xbox 360 (via GamesIndustry.biz).
The IDC report states that PS3 shipments are 77 million worldwide, versus Xbox 360 shipments of 76 million.
Although it's something of a hollow victory given that next-gen is looming on the horizon, it's still something Sony will no doubt celebrate given PS3 launched a year after Xbox 360 and had a rocky start compared to Microsoft's console.
Note that these aren't official figures from Sony or Microsoft though, as neither publisher has come forward with shipment figures since the Christmas period.
IDC also notes that Nintendo will have shipped 50 million Wii U units worldwide by the end of 2016.
