Skyrim: Hearthfire DLC - How To Find A Steward Or Adopt A Child
Want the easy way to collect lumber, clay or quarried stone? You'll need a steward, here's how to get one...

So you've finally bought a plot of land in Skyrim's Hearthfire DLC, and now you have the gruelling task of turning that house into a home.
How To Find A Steward
If you want to make your life easy during the construction of your home, then you'll need a steward. They're easy to get, however, since all you need is a friend.
First build the basic one-room building. The materials are stored in the chest near to your plot of land, so be sure to collect them all and use them to on the Drafting Table and Carpenter's Table.
Once done, find a follower you would like to become your steward and ask them to "come with you". Once following, take them to your plot of land and ask them if they would like to be your steward.
It doesn't matter how fiery their spirit is, they'll happily conform to your will - and will forever work as your steward at your home.
What this means is that they will be around to offer you any services you might need in the upkeep of your house: from hiring bards and carriage drives, buying animals or - best of all - purchasing construction materials.
You can buy quarried stone (100G), clay (100G) or lumber (200G) from your steward - though remember these can also be gathered from elsewhere around the world.
Anything else, such as the most important material iron ingot, needs to be bought from shopkeepers and smithys around Skyrim. The likes of glass and straw can be bought from Whiterun.
And that's it.
How To Adopt A Child
Much like the steward, this is fairly simple to achieve - however there are a few pre-requisites first.
To adopt a child you must first have a spare room in your house to find somewhere for them to stay.
This means you'll need to build a main hall and the necessary conjoining spaces for a child to live there.
Once done, all you need to do is find a child. This might sound a little creepy, but that really is all there is to it. There is usually at least one homeless child in each city, so find them and speak to them.
Speak to them and eventually you'll be given the option to say "I could adopt you, if you like?" which will lead to having the child move into your house.
If you don't have the right features in your house just yet, the child won't be able to move in.
