Windows 8 will be available on 26 October, Microsoft has revealed.
The OS has been in development for over three years and brings touch-screen controls and the modern Xbox-style 'Metro' user-interface to PC for the first time.
Microsoft made the announcement ahead of an earnings report today, which could reveal the software firm's first ever loss, according to reports.
The Windows 8 preview version has been in the hands of users for some time, and the OS is also headed to Microsoft's Surface tablets when they launch later this year.
