Airtight Games continues Capcom tradition of ultra-hard games
With all eyes on the East of late and Keiji Inafune’s claims that the Japanese games market is ‘finished’, Capcom is one company that is certainly trying to diversify when it comes to its games portfolio, first with Bionic Commando and now Dark Void from Airtight Games.
Speaking in an interview with 360 Magazine, Airtight Games' senior producer Morgan Gray confessed several tasty news nuggets about the development of the upcoming game, including insights into the game's inception. “Based on Airtight’s experience with Crimson Skies, we knew we wanted elements of dogfighting. That led to the earth-shattering conclusion that jetpacks are awesome. Everything fell into place from there.”

When asked whether Dark Void would boast Capcom’s legendary hardcore difficulty levels, Gray replied: “Capcom games are difficult? Dark Void actually features a hardcore difficulty setting that I have yet to beat the game on, and I’ve been trying for a long time! I think the gaming elite will have a fun challenge ahead of them if they are trying to 100 per cent Dark Void.”
The senior producer did go on to say that the studio has learnt some lessons from previous Capcom releases, such as Bionic Commando, when it comes to the make-up of its games: “We have taken lessons from many games and development teams. As for lessons from Bionic Commando, we really liked how the ‘mid-game’ really doubled down on the use of the core mechanics; it gave us the courage to really push what could happen when you have a jetpack in our level design – our second episode plays very differently than most of the games out there because of that (thanks, Grin!). The original vision is our beacon as we try to navigate the ups and downs of making a game, but we never let it blind us to adapting to new changes, learning from our own mistakes as well as others, and outright stealing good ideas.”
