XCOM won't only be returning in the form of a 1950's-inspired tactical shooter, but also as a rebooted, turn-based strategy game for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, 2K has announced.

Better still, Civilization studio Firaxis is on development duties, meaning fans of the original XCOM games should be very excited. Indeed.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," Firaxis president Steve Martin told GI, which revealed the game on its latest cover.

"We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

The February magazine will cover the "destructible tactical environments, the interaction between the real-time strategic view and the turn-based combat," as well as the improvements that the XCOM team can research.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is scheduled to hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 by Autumn 2012.
