Minecraft Inspired Epic’s Construct-And Shoot-‘Em-Up Fortnite
Gears of War developer Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite, the game it revealed at the VGAs over the weekend, does take inspiration from PC indie smash Minecraft.
Fortnite’s teaser trailer reveals a stylised, colourful world in which players construct a fortress during daylight, before fending off monsters at night – much like Minecraft.
“Minecraft was an inspiration for sure,” Fortnite’s lead designer Lee Perry wrote on Twitter.
Fortnite currently has no release window, platforms or even a publisher. The night sections revert a third-person shooter perspective.
“Minecraft lets you build ANYTHING, we are focusing on constructing ‘buildings’ specifically,” Perry added. “I see lots of questions asking if #fortnite is freeform construction. It is. It’s not scripted or just boarding up existing structures.”
“It stands to reason if you can build a world, anything can be destroyed,” he explained. “It’s not scripted or just boarding up existing structures.”
Perry said the chances of “weapon crafting/traps, lvl system, underground exploration, Boss fights, team survival mode, rare loot” for Fortnite are high.
Epic’s certainly got us interested – what say you? Leave us a comment below!
