GDC 2012 Rumours: iPad 3, Sim City, Medal Of Honor, Unreal Engine 4
GDC 2012 is already in full swing in San Francisco this week with game makers from AAA titles all the way down to mobile games descending on the city to talk shop, promote new technology and – hopefully – reveal some new games.
We’ve compiled a list of the most likely news, rumours and reveals set to come out of GDC 2012 below.
EA: Sim City 5, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Dragon Age 3
A new Sim City was heavily teased for a GDC a couple of weeks back, before Sim City 5 was actually confirmed via a European magazine. EA has been promising more on Medal of Honor: Warfighter since it was confirmed to be in development at the end of last month. Look out for even more MoH details when EA’s event kicks off in the early hours of Wednsday morning UK time. Meanwhile EA has revealed a new Swedish studio, EA Gothenberg, which will work on Frostbite 2.0-powered titles going forward – but there’s no hint of what it’s working on – yet.
Apple: iPad 3, Angry Birds Space
Apple is revealing a new iPad in San Francisco at a bespoke press event, away from GDC, on Wednesday. Hit the link for a round-up of what to expect from Apple’s iPad 3 – and look out for more on the iOS front – including a full reveal for Angry Birds Space – towards the end of the week at GDC.
Sony: God of War 4, LittleBigPlanet Karting, Quantic Dream
PS3 fans gamers may have a few things to smile about during GDC, with Heavy Rain creator David Cage confirmed to be showing off new tech from his studio, Quantic Dream. Elsewhere Polish dev Plastic and Sony Santa Monic will be showing spooky PS Move collaboration Datura, and there’ll be more on Papo & Yo, too.
Sony Japan has also confirmed it will reveal new PS Vita games on Friday, so there’s a chance they could hit SF too.
Epic Games: Next-Gen Unreal Engine 4
Epic Games is working on Fortnite right now, but it’s also got something big up its sleeve – the next version of the Unreal Engine, UE4, designed for ‘future platforms’.
Unreal Engine 4 is set to be shown behind closed doors to a very select bunch though, so don’t expect too much info right away. You might see these GDC T-Shirts though:
Kojima Productions: Metal Gear Solid 5, Project Ogre
Hideo Kojima’s studio is hiring for the next Metal Gear Solid at GDC, and has recently been showing off its imprssive new Fox Engine tech (below) too. Yep, that horse isn’t in that office – because none of it’s real.
The Best of the Rest: Game of Thrones, Valve, Avalanche
The recent rumours swirling around Valve suggest the company could be working on a new, Steam-based PC-in-a-box/console which could be officially revealed this week, if not at E3.
Just Cause studio Avalanche recently confirmed it has three AAA titles to reveal in the next few months – GDC could be the perfect place.
The Game of Thrones MMO will be revealed further by BigPoint Games.
