Nintendo had a great 2009, with some hugely profitable casual releases. But that only means that hardcore gamers missed out. 2010 on the other hand, is the year that we finally get the sort of games we’ve been waiting for.

Last generation, Retro Studios took Nintendo’s dormant Metroid series and resurrected it in style, crafting one of the finest first-person adventure games in the process. Metroid Prime was one of the boldest reinventions in the company’s history but, two sequels later, the series is once again in need of some fresh ideas. Enter Team Ninja, perhaps Nintendo’s most unlikely ally, with a sexy new spin on an old favourite. When Samus Aran returns this year, she’ll be a new hero entirely. No longer the slow lumbering gunslinger of old, if Team Ninja gets its way, she’ll be as acrobatic as Strider Hiryu and as violent as Bayonetta. With such a refreshing new take, as well as commitment to the staples of non-linear exploration and storytelling, Other M could be yet another dazzling resurgence for this beloved franchise.
